Historical Society Exhibit Co-funded in Honor of Three CFIS Teachers

The Chagrin Falls Historical Society and Museum held a special holiday exhibit that was funded in part by anonymous donors in honor of Chagrin Falls Intermediate School fourth-grade teacher Katie Adick, fifth-grade teacher Pat McArthur and sixth-grade teacher Katherine Owen.

The exhibit, “Under the Tree: A Celebration of Gifts for Children,” ran from Nov. 29 until Jan. 25 at the Chagrin Falls Historical Society and Museum at 87 E. Washington St. The society’s mission is to discover, preserve and share any knowledge or objects about the history of Chagrin Falls to enable those who either live, work or visit the area to appreciate the past, present, and future of the city.

This holiday season, the “Under the Tree” exhibit consisted of five Christmas trees decorated to represent certain eras. Beneath the tree were presents and toys specific to that era from the museum’s object collection. The exhibit began with a tree decorated between 1890 and 1909 and ended with a tree between the years of 1970 and 1989.

Two anonymous donors sponsored the exhibit, the first being in honor of Carolyn Sihler and Laura Gorretta for their work and expertise, while the other was in honor of the CFIS teachers.

“A few of the greatest gifts a person can receive include the gifts of inspiration, self-confidence and discovery. These Chagrin Falls Intermediate School teachers are generously handing out these gifts every day to students and from all of us who are touched by their devotion to teaching – thank you,” said Ruth Zeager, executive director Chagrin Falls Historical Society and Museum.

The intermediate school teachers took advantage of the opportunity and took their students to visit the exhibit during their social studies classes.

CFMS Students of the Month

The Student of the Month award at Chagrin Falls Middle School acknowledges students for their outstanding performance and rewards them for their efforts. The students were chosen by seventh- and eighth-grade teams to be a Tiger of the Month for January.

The students exemplify the Tiger Techniques of Think, Integrity, Grit, Effort and Responsibility. They receive personalized tiger water bottles from the PTO.

Seventh-grader Lauren Vasko has shown that she is ready to put in extra time, if necessary, to ensure that she is prepared for her classes. This work ethic is a great example for her classmates, making her a major asset for our school. Lauren never misses an opportunity to help out her teachers and/or her classmates. She is such an independent thinker. She doesn’t have to be asked to “help out,” she reads a situation and does what is necessary. She is a critical thinker and analyzer, which brings great depth to debates and Socratic Seminars. Lauren is a leader and role model to her peers.

Seventh-grader Eire Ratcliffe pursues his various interests with intensity and his incisive questions help our whole class learn more every day. Eire has a creative take on classroom projects. He is a flexible thinker and is such an asset to team projects in class. Eire has an easy-going nature and has such a gentle social presence. He is not only a valued member of any classroom debates or Socratic Seminars, but is also a diligent member of the Speech and Debate team where he has been recognized for his outstanding Public Forum Debate skills and research. What a model student who has a passion for learning. Eire works very well with other students and engages in every activity with enthusiasm and excitement. Eire has an interest in science and shares with the class his many personal experiences that connect to the curriculum to make learning meaningful and fun.

Eighth-grader Peyton Pierce is a hard worker. She helps her peers and helps make lessons fun. Peyton is also kind young lady. She always enters class with a positive attitude and does what is expected of her with a smile. She can always be counted on to serve as a role model for her peers. She is an all-around great student.

Eighth-grader Griffin Laws is a very conscientious young man and takes pride in his work. He is prepared for class and tasks. He is knowledgeable and is always engaged in class content. Also, Griffin has been very kind and helpful to our new tuba player this year in band.
