District Facilities Update and CFIS Tour

Chagrin Falls PTO, in partnership with the Chagrin Falls Exempted Village Schools, is hosting a community meeting on Feb. 15 to discuss the facilities plan/operating levy that is on the May 2 ballet. The meeting will be held at the Intermediate School on Philomethian Street.

Tours will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a meeting in the cafeteria at 7:30 p.m. Two generous donors have offered to donate $5 for each Chagrin Falls School District registered voter who attends the tour from 7-7:30 p.m., up to $2,000. Please consider attending the tour and staying to hear the updated facilities information from district administration.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Students from Chagrin Falls middle and high schools received many awards from The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers’ annual Scholastic Art & Writings competition. They were honored at an awards ceremony and reception at the Cleveland Museum of Art on Jan. 15. Their artwork was displayed in the museum’s exhibit, open to the public, through Feb. 3.

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, identifies teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent and brings their remarkable work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Each year, the Alliance partners with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country to bring the awards to local communities. Teens in grades seven through 12 can apply in 29 categories of art and writing. Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

Last year, students submitted 320,000 works of art and writing to the awards; more than 85,000 were recognized at the regional level and celebrated in local exhibitions and ceremonies. The top 2,500 works in the country earned national medals and were celebrated at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall.

The 29 students that were honored from Chagrin Falls middle and high schools include:

Gold Key winners are: Catie Beg (Skeletal Deconstruction Mixed Media-CFHS); Jacob Moore (Architectural Scape Drawing and Illustration-CFHS); Graham Smith (Built for Ruin Photography-CFHS); Aiden Stephens (Self Portrait-CFHS); and Maria Tropp (Contrast Photography-CFHS). They move on to the national competition.

Silver Key winners are: Paul Cantlay (Finger Food-CFHS); Jack Deignan (Great Dane Printmaking-CFHS); Elise Kosmides (Time Does Not Heal All Wounds-CFHS); Tessa Kostelec (Point Unity Sculpture-CFHS); Jacob Moore (Untitled #1 Digital Art, Waterfall Digital Art and Untitled Photography -CFHS); and Tori Calder (Untitled Drawing and Illustration-CFMS).

Honorable mention winners are: Robin Barth (Autumn Still Life Drawing and Illustration-CFHS); Paul Cantlay (Untitled Vase Ceramics & Glass); Lindy Cunnington (Autumn Still Life-CFHS); Jane Goble (Vascular Bowl Ceramics & Glass); Sam Gottsegen (Slide Ceramics & Glass -CFHS); Luke Hopkins (Self Portrait-CFHS); Eriana Kellis (Self Portrait Drawing and Illustration-CFHS); Elise Kosmides (Mechanical Spine-CFHS); Ali Mazzola (The Art Of Geology-CFHS); Jacob Moore (Untitled #2 Digital-CFHS); Charles Moyse (Untitled Drawing and Illustration-CFHS); Emily Porter (Beams-CFHS); Evan Teicher (Vines Photography-CFHS): Brooke Weitzel (Like The Back Of My Hand-CFHS); Sophia Avery (Untitled Drawing and Illustration-CFMS); and Lily Weinberger (Edible Snake Printmaking-CFMS).

Student Heads to Curling Championship in South Korea

Chagrin Falls High School junior Allison Howell is getting ready to travel to the Junior World Curling Championship in South Korea with the 2017 High Performance National U.S. Junior Women’s Team. The team is made up of four girls from across the United States.

Howell has been playing competitively since 2009 and over the years has competed with each one of her teammates. She has previously won bronze and silver at the Junior National Championships, but this was the first year she won gold with her team, which allowed them to compete at the World Championship.

“I am looking forward to this awesome opportunity of traveling to Gangneung, South Korea, to compete in the Junior World Curling Championship,” said Howell. “I am exceptionally fortunate to be going to the Olympic venue in South Korea where the 2018 Winter Olympics will be taking place. It will be such a memorable experience.”

The publication features a message from Superintendent, Robert Hunt, updates on the January Board of Education meetings, “Super Spotlights” of students and staff, as well as many stories and photos of happenings in the school buildings.
