CFMS Career Speaker Program

On Jan. 22, Chagrin Falls High School 1980 graduate Tim Clegg, CEO and founder of Americhip Enterprises, spoke to Chagrin Falls Middle School students about his career in entrepreneurship as part of their ongoing Career Speaker Program. Clegg privately owns three successful companies and shared with the students the educational and business path that led him to where he is today.

Clegg focused on the importance of a variety of academic classes students are currently taking. He talked to them about how important art classes are when he looks to hire personnel for his graphic designs department, how important English classes are and how if people can’t make their thoughts and ideas clear in writing they will have a difficult time in any business. He gave math students encouragement discussing how important their skills are to companies who trust them to keep them out of the red.

The students had a number of questions for Clegg and his presentation was very well received.

The Career Speaker Program continued on Feb. 1, when Dr. Christopher Young spoke to the students. Dr. Young is with the Cleveland Clinic specializing in family medicine at the Chagrin Falls location. He was pleased to see many of his patients in the audience.

Dr. Young is a 1988 graduate of Chagrin Falls High School and was the Scholar Athlete of the Year in 1988.

During his talk with the students, he went over what a day in his life as a doctor looks like. He discussed the skill set that is necessary for this career as well as the educational and financial requirements necessary to follow this path. Dr. Young gave the students much to think about as they begin considering what courses they would like to schedule in high school.

The middle school Career Speaker Program this year has centered on bringing alumni back to the district to share what path they walked once they left the halls of Chagrin Schools.

CFHS Band, Orchestra Perform at Disney World

During the long four-day weekend of Feb. 13-16, the Chagrin Falls High School band and orchestra visited Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Students participated in both educational and entertainment excursions while on their trip.

Band and orchestra members had the opportunity to perform in front of a crowd of visitors, with the orchestra playing at downtown Disney and the band marching in a parade at Magic Kingdom.

Band junior Lou Duloisy reflects on the performance, “It was amazing to be able to perform to such a large audience. We definitely were able to experience what it’s like to be a professional musician.”

Band students also took part in the Disney Performing Arts “You’re Instrumental” workshop in which they played a live performance of the music in the classic Disney film, “Tarzan.” They honed their sight-reading skills under the guidance of an experienced Disney teaching artist.

In addition to their educational experiences, band and orchestra members also were able to enjoy the parks, rides and other amenities that the resort had to offer. Students visited theme parks, went on rides and went to Epcot and Hollywood Studios during their visit.

“It was such a cool experience; it was so interesting to go backstage and meet the characters,” expressed Madeline Mitchell, a band junior.

Band and orchestra students enjoyed their long weekend thanks to the hard work and diligent planning of band director Kathy Shoenfelt, orchestra director Kendra Karriker and the parents of students attending.

It was the group’s fourth visit to the resort with the Disney Performing Arts Program.
