National Merit Recognition

Chardon High School seniors Daniel Brill, Morgan Fisher and Theo Jons have been named 2022 commended students in the National Merit scholarship program now in its 67th year.

In the National Merit program, commended students account for approximately 34,000 students nationwide who achieved high scores on the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) and are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score. Commended students may become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

Community Learning Field Trip

Chardon High School teacher Amanda Bunker provides her students with an array of community learning opportunities throughout the school year, including seasonal walking field trips to Chardon Square and surrounding community businesses.

On Sept. 16, the class walked to the Giant Eagle grocery store on Center Street in Chardon to learn about careers and consumer costs.

“CHS students completed mini interviews of the department employees about job-specific questions and researched the costs of various foods,” said Mrs. Bunker. “They (the students) also mapped out our route and navigated safely in their community.”

AHLI Studies Energy at the Zoo

Through the Arthur Holden Leadership Institute program, 33 Chardon High School eighth-grade students took a field trip to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on Sept. 17.  Chardon Schools bus driver Paul Cicerelli provided transportation for students and staff to and from the event.

“The students were tasked with a scavenger hunt to document energy transformations in the zoo,” said science teacher and eighth-grade AHLI advisor Amber Yeager.

AHLI is a three-year program offered on a teacher-recommended basis for students in grade levels six through eight, providing opportunities for practical field experience in the areas of math and science while enriching character and leadership skills development. The program, made possible by the generous financial support of the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation in cooperation with Lake County YMCA and additional community partners, offers hands-on activities through regular after-school meetings and monthly field trips with grade-level-specific studies of water, soil and energy.

National IT Professionals Day

On National IT Professionals Day on Sept. 21, Chardon Schools recognized its information technology staff members through notes of gratitude on the district’s social media pages.

The district expressed gratitude for its key IT wizards – Director of Technology Bill Nells and technology support technician Chris Hercik – who work diligently year-round to keep essential computer equipment working for staff; Chromebooks up-to-date for students; and applications running smoothly each day throughout the district.

In addition, Chardon Schools recognized the valued tech support provided to students and staff by district teachers who also serve as building-specific technology coordinators. The district’s 2021-22 technology coordinators are: Chardon High School teachers Allen Herner and Kristen Niedzwiecki; Chardon Middle School teachers Nikki Diehm, Rachel Holub and Tammy Schreffler; Munson Elementary teacher Brian Buemi; and Park Elementary teacher Rebecca Klembara.
