American Education Week

Established in 1921, American Education Week recognizes the significant contributions made by faculty, support staff, parents, guardians and community members who partner together to promote student success in the public school classroom and readiness to soar in the post-graduation world.

“In the Chardon Local Schools community, we are all Chardon Hilltoppers working toward one common goal — high achievement for all students where learning is our most important work — and we are grateful for the countless ways in which our staff, student families, and board and community members collaborate to fulfill our critical mission,” said Superintendent Mike Hanlon on Nov. 15, the week’s kickoff date. “Each and every person plays an integral role — it is a true team effort.”

Park Teacher Receives Grant

Park Elementary School first-grade teacher Robyn Lannon is the grateful Ohio recipient of Kinetic by Windstream’s $1,000 educational supplies grant awarded during an outdoor ceremony held on school grounds Nov. 11. The event, which was led by Kinetic regional field marketing operations consultant Shawna Cossin in conjunction with the Chardon Chamber of Commerce, was well attended by several Kinetic staff members and Chamber members, as well as Chardon Local Schools board president Madelon Horvath.

The Chardon Chamber said the non-profit couldn’t have been more thrilled to have been asked to facilitate the presentation and that its members are thankful to Kinetic for honoring such a wonderful teacher and community member.

The grant opportunity was made possible by a Park Elementary family nominating Mrs. Lannon as “an incredible asset to Chardon Local Schools” in Kinetic’s Nominate Your Favorite Teacher Back-to-School contest.

At the contest’s end, Mrs. Lannon was then chosen by Kinetic as one of 16 teachers in the same number of states to receive one of the $1,000 grants.

Over the past 16 years and counting, Mrs. Lannon has demonstrated her dedication to the education of students in the Chardon community. For over nine years, she served as a children’s librarian, working with toddlers, elementary school students, and teens at the Chardon Public Library. Mrs. Lannon is now in her seventh year with Chardon Local Schools where she has taught the fourth- and fifth-grade levels and most recently, the first-grade level.

Mrs. Lannon expressed her deep gratitude to Kinetic and Chardon Chamber during the Nov. 11 ceremony and admitted with a smile that it was impossible to have dry eyes during this presentation.

The honorary Park teacher, who was featured in a Chardon Schools newsletter last spring, shared at that time how she views her role stating that a teacher is reflective, evolving and always researching and that a teacher looks for new ways to engage students and bring thoughtful discussion about a topic to class.

“I know I am constantly thinking about how to be my best for my students,” added Mrs. Lannon.

National School Psychology Week

During the second week of November, schools throughout the United States celebrate National School Psychology Week to highlight the important work school psychologists and other educators do to help all students thrive.

In honor of that week, Chardon Local Schools recognized the district’s four psychologists on its social media pages Nov. 12: Joan Benedejcic, M.Ed. at Chardon Early Learning Center and Chardon High School; Emily Ringler, Ed.S. at CELC, Chardon MIddle School and Park Elementary; Jessica Westlake, Ed.S. at CELC; and Meghan Wozniak, Psy.S. at CELC, CHS and Munson Elementary.
