American Legion Names Buckeye State Delegates

Chardon High School juniors Caroline Evans, Dominic Iskra, Elaina Mardula, Meadow McDonald, Violet Meissner, Brendan Ptasznik, Devney Rich and Ryan Zielinski have been named Buckeye State Program 2024 delegates by the Chardon American Legion Post 167.

Each year, the high school’s nomination process for this program focuses on juniors who demonstrate interest in government and current events, high moral character and strong leadership skills, an above-average academic standing and a quest for knowledge. The candidates are then interviewed for final selection by Chardon American Legion Post 167, which generously sponsors the complete cost of the program for Chardon delegates.

The Buckeye State Program is a prestigious, student leadership opportunity through which student delegates from around Ohio attend a one-week session, coming together to learn about duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of good citizenship. Ultimately, the delegates collaborate to conduct a state and local government simulation.

This year’s program will be held at Bowling Green State University (girls) June 9-15 and Miami University, Oxford, (boys) June 9-16.

Academic Decathlon Rockets to State Qualification

Chardon High School’s Academic Decathlon team, with a multi-decade history of success that includes countless years of high performance at the state level of competition, continues to make Chardon proud — most recently in being named a 2024 state qualifier following stellar performance this month at regionals.

ACADEC Coach Al Herner stated, “Our 11-member team stormed Riverside High School on Feb. 3 to take on the live events of regional competition. Having completed seven objective tests and written an essay online last month, ACADEC Hilltoppers were now facing the Speech, Interview and Superquiz events. By the time the dust of ACADEC regional competition had settled, Chardon had garnered 36 individual medals — eight bronze, 16 silver and 12 gold — on their way to being crowned champions of the Large School Division.”

Congratulations to the team, which comprises seniors Joey Grano, Lizzy Rockenberger and Colin Youdath; juniors Brandon French, Lucas Gajda, Danny Greene and Kayla Schneider; sophomore Toby Rogers; and freshmen Jack Bennett, Bryce Gajda and Gus Schneider.

Chardon ACADEC 2024 will travel to John Carroll University March 8-9 for the state arena of competition.
