Election Day Voting
Students throughout the Chardon Local School district made their voices heard on a number of important issues on Election Day.
At Park Elementary School, students voted to choose the name of the school’s new pet turtle. Using voting areas set up in the Park conference room, students reviewed ballots which contained 10 potential names for the new pet before ultimately casting their vote.
After all of the votes were tallied, it was determined that the name for the new turtle would be Squirtle — inspired by a species from Nintendo’s Pokemon franchise.
At Munson Elementary School, first-grade students in Mrs. Jeana Hardman’s class had another important decision to make — chocolate chip cookies or Oreos?
After reading about Election Day in their Scholastic News, students put their learning to action, going to their voting booths and choosing their preferred cookie. After all of the votes were tallied, Oreo was determined to be the class favorite, winning 14 votes compared to seven for chocolate chip.
“It was an exciting victory for Oreo. Students enjoyed an Oreo treat,” Hardman said.
STEM Goes Red for Girls
Chardon Middle School was one of 30 Northeast Ohio schools to recently participate in the STEM Goes Red for Girls event at the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland.
Sponsored by the American Heart Association, STEM Goes Red for Girls is an annual event that promotes young women entering scientific fields of study.
CMS students at the event were immersed in a variety of exciting opportunities. They had the chance to speak with women in STEM fields who encouraged them to consider similar careers. They also interacted with students from other area schools while completing several engaging, inquiry-based activities.
