CHS Model UN Club
Model United Nations, also known as Model UN, is an academic competition in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations and the United Nations. Under the direction of CHS social studies teacher Michael Mosnik, Chardon High School has organized its first Model UN Club.
Participants in Model UN conferences, known as delegates, are placed in committees and assigned countries where they represent members of that body. They are presented with their assignments in advance, along with a topic or topics that their committee will discuss.
Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they will then debate with their fellow delegates in the committee, staying true to the actual position of the member they represent. At the end of a conference, the best-performing delegates in each committee, as well as delegations, are recognized with awards.
The Chardon Club recently participated in a Crisis Conference at Mentor High School with Gilmour, Solon and St. Edward students also participating. The theme was “Real World, Real Time.” The scenario that guided this crisis conference involved the Syrian Crisis.
Chardon High School had six students win awards including: Outstanding Delegates – Drew Williams and Jason Tysl (who represented the UK in the UN Security Council); Honorable Mention – Kyle Gessel (who represented Russia in the UN Security Council), Nick Schragal (who played the role of Russian Minister of Trade Denis Manturov, a member of the Russian Cabinet) and Connor Prusha (who played the role of Turkish Minister of EU Affairs Omer Celik, a member of the Cabinet for Turkey); and Delegate’s Choice – Connor Fuerst (who played the role of Syrian Minister of National Reconciliation Affairs Ali Haidar).
CHS Fall Play
The Chardon High School Drama Department will present “Welcome to the Monkey House,” a play adapted from a collection of short stories of the same name written by Kurt Vonnegut. The stories range from wartime epics to futuristic thrillers, given with satire and Vonnegut’s unique edge. The stories are often intertwined and convey the same underlying messages on human nature and present society.
Performance dates and curtain times are Nov. 17-19 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. Performances are at Park Auditorium on Chardon Square. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students.
CMS Attendance Line
Parents and guardians are able to report their child’s absence, early dismissal, or late arrival using an automated voicemail system. Simply call 440-285-4062 and press 1 for absences. Please report the student’s absence no later than 9 a.m. on the day of said absence. Planned absences may be called in prior. When reporting an absence, please be prepared to clearly state the following: Student’s first and last name; spelling of last name; grade; date or time of arrival/dismissal; reason for absence, late arrival/early dismissal; and parent/guardian reporter’s name.
Robotics Club
Maple School has organized an after-school Robotics Club. The group met for the first time on Oct. 20 with 36 students in grades 1-5 signed up to participate.
