Thank You, Chardon BOE
January is School Board Recognition Month in Ohio and Chardon Local Schools joins districts across the state to say thanks to local leaders for their dedication and willingness to serve as advocates for our children and public schools. As elected officials, they are an important voice of the community, serving first and foremost in the best interest of Chardon schoolchildren.
Even though we are making a special effort in January to show appreciation to our board members, we realize their many contributions reflect a year-round commitment. These public servants sit through meetings, read detailed reports, listen to parents’ concerns and do the hard work to benefit the students and the community at large. They bring a variety of skills and backgrounds to their task, and they take their responsibilities seriously. The whole community benefits from their vigilance in providing good schools.
Heartfelt thanks to Chardon Board of Education members Karen Blankenship, Sheldon Firem, Madelon Horvath, Paul Stefanko and Guy Wilson.
MindUp
The Chardon Middle School Guidance Department is piloting a program this year called MindUp, which focuses on teaching students about mindfulness. Mindfulness is simply a method of mental training, where one maintains a moment-by-moment awareness of one’s thoughts, feelings and surrounding environment.
The MindUp curriculum is a science-driven, evidence based curriculum consisting of 15 classroom lessons designed to improve learning, drive positive behavior and increase focus, empathy, optimism and compassion. Students in sixth and seventh grades will be participating in the curriculum during advisory time once a week in the cafeteria.
The school is hoping to start with about 10 students who are referred by their parents, teachers and counselors. Learn more at https://mindup.org.
Kindergarten Information Night
Kindergarten is an exciting and unfamiliar time for parents and students, and Chardon Schools is here to help. Parents and guardians of children entering kindergarten in the fall are invited to attend a kindergarten information night on Feb. 1 to learn about Chardon’s kindergarten program, meet the principals, teachers, fellow parents and begin the registration process. Join at 6:30 PM in the Chardon Middle School large group instruction room (LGIR) at 424 North St.
Parents of Sixth-Grade Students
Children are required by state law to have both a meningococcal and a Tdap immunization before the start of seventh-grade. It is not too early to immunize one’s child to be in compliance for next year.
Chardon Middle Schoool nurse Lori Strickland is accepting these immunizations records now. Email lori.strickland@chardonschools.org or call the school at 440-286-0457 with any questions or concerns.

When Mobil Ed’s STEAM Museum visited Hambden Elementary School students loved taking turns on the bike generator. As students pedal the bike, they convert their kinetic energy into electricity, first illuminating low-power LEDs until finally creating enough power to light halogen lamps at the top of the tower.
