Facilities Master Planning

The Chardon Local School District is currently engaged in Facilities Master Planning and will host community information nights on four different dates across the district. Community engagement is a vital component of the process, so attendance is encouraged. All presentations begin at 7 p.m.

Information nights will be held at Park Auditorium, Feb. 8; Maple School, Feb. 13; Munson School, Feb. 22; and Hambden School, March 7.

To recap the planning process so far, in July 2016, the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission (OSFC) provided the district enrollment projections and conducted an initial assessment of its current facilities.

The enrollment projections show a 10 percent decline over the next 10 years. The OSFC recommends reducing the number of elementary buildings to streamline operational efficiencies. The assessment concludes that the majority of district school buildings are beyond reasonable renovation and need to be replaced.

This past December, the district organized a Facilities Advisory Committee comprised of community members, parents and staff to review the work of the OSFC and develop a long-range Facilities Master Plan. In mid-January the Chardon Board of Education hired the architectural firm TDA in Willoughby to validate the OSFC report and assist the Facilities Advisory Committee in developing a conceptual master plan that is cost-effective and meets the long-term educational needs of the district.

Throughout the process, various information, photos, presentations and videos regarding the planning will be available on the district website under “Facilities Planning” at www.chardonschools.org.

Hilltoppers Visit Bobcats

Chardon High School physical education teacher Tim Armelli brought 18 of his students to Broadmoor School in Mentor on Jan. 20. Broadmoor School serves special needs students in Lake County. The Hilltoppers were on hand to participate in the annual basketball game versus the Broadmoor Bobcats.

While Chardon was soundly defeated by 12 points, students from both schools had a memorable day. After the game, CHS students enjoyed lunch with the Broadmoor students and a tour of the facility. The students were able to observe the services provided to the students at Broadmoor. CHS students finished the day by assisting the teachers in the gym with physical activities for several physical education classes.

Wind Ensemble Field Trip

The CHS Wind Ensemble group experienced the “Ultimate Cleveland Field Trip” at University Circle & Playhouse Square on Jan. 20. The Chardon High School students joined Melissa Lichtler, CHS Director of Bands, for a tour of Cleveland’s best. Not only did they use their senses to experience the day, they had the opportunity to participate in real life experiences.

The field trip included a workshop at Case Western Reserve University with Dr. Ryan Scherber followed by visits to the Botanical Gardens, Cleveland Museum of Art, Natural History Museum, dinner at Zach Bruell’s Dynomite and finally to Playhouse Square to see the Broadway production of “Into the Woods.”

The 100th day of school is the perfect time to have fun with the number 100 and Park kindergartners had a blast learning, counting and demonstrating their newly acquired knowledge. Each student made a display showing 100 items using Legos, stickers, pompoms and more.
