Fingerprints For The Future

Kenston’s Timmons Elementary School first-graders worked on the service-learning project as part of their Valentine’s Day celebration. Continuing a Valentine’s Day tradition, they worked with the Alliance for the Great Lakes to create note cards with “finger print” animal artwork.

The animals created represent some of the animals and birds native to the Great Lakes region. Hyle Lowry, the outreach coordinator from the Alliance for the Great Lakes, talked to students about the significance of the Great Lakes in our everyday lives.

KMS Students of The Month

Kenston Middle School is pleased to announce their Students of the Month.

Students selected for Student of the Month honors are sixth-graders Julia Fegedy, Alex Hubert, Delaney Kramer and Connor Quinlin; seventh-graders Maddie Bednar, Lydia Fielding, Ben Obringer and Andrew Radis; and eighth-graders Joseph Belsan, Antoinette Marinello, Gabriela Salvini and De’Mark Wastson-Powell.

Community Day of Fitness, Fun

On April 14, the Kenston School District will host the second annual Play Blue in Motion, a community day of fitness and fun, from 1-4 p.m. at the Kenston High School, 9500 Bainbridge Road in Bainbridge Township. The event is free and open to the public.

The inaugural event in 2012 drew nearly 1,500 people. Like last year, Play Blue in Motion will feature opportunities for physical activity for every member of the family, including sports clinics, yoga and dance instruction, spin classes, fitness demonstrations and contests, and much more.

This year’s event will include more food vendors, cooking demonstrations, recipe sharing, a Kenston Cook Blue Future Chefs cook-off for Kenston students in grades K-5, free samples from an A to Z salad bar and much more.

As part of the Play Blue in Motion event, the Kenston School District is sponsoring a three-month Biggest Loser contest for school district employees, which attracted nearly 50 competitors hoping to shed pounds and keep fit. The winner of the Kenston Biggest Loser contest will be announced at the April 14 Play Blue in Motion event.

Kimberly McCune Gibson, chef and local representative of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative, is serving as honorary chair of the event. New England Patriots punter Zoltan Mesko, who is from Romania, but grew up in Twinsburg, is the Play Blue keynote athlete and will be at the event to interact with kids and sign autographs.

Through Play Blue in Motion, the Kenston School District hopes to continue its commitment to engage the community in celebrating physical fitness and its positive impact on academic performance. The Play Blue initiative began when Kenston was awarded a $677,000 federal grant in October 2010 for physical education programming for the district’s 3,200 K-12 students. “Play” is an acronym for Promoting Learning through Active Youth.
