Senior Receives HSK Award

Kenston High School senior Henry Bauer received a HSK Award from The Confucius Institute of Cleveland State University. HSK is an international standardized exam that tests and rates Chinese language proficiency. It assesses non-native Chinese speakers’ abilities in using the Chinese language in their daily, academic and professional lives.

Russian Scholar Laureate

Zach Eyler has been selected as an American Council of Teachers of Russian Scholar Laureate. Zach is a member of a highly selective group of Russian students from secondary schools across the United States all of whom were selected by their teachers and principals as the most outstanding Russian student at their school. He was recognized with a certificate and special lapel pin by his Russian teacher, Mr. Ted Krejsa.

All Academic

Congratulations to the students who earned All Academic honors for 2015-16 winter sports. To be selected for this award students must have a cumulative average after seven semesters of 3.25 GPA or better and have lettered in their sport for two years.

Basketball student athletes were Michaela Barnes, Jack Belkin, Parker Gdula, CJ Maynard, Sarah Spehn, Drew Sova and Taylor Wiegand. Ice Hockey student athletes Ryan Herpy and Bailey Mulhern earned All Academic honors.

Cheerleaders Samantha Adams and Morgan Measures were honored with All Academic awards. Swimming and dive team members honored with All Academic awards were Erica Abbarno, Maggie Krause, Josh Shahidian and Brad Toth.

Fine Arts Showcase

Kenston Schools will host the inaugural Fine Arts Showcase on April 24 in the high school auditorium and gymnasium. The Showcase will feature the District Art Show and music performances by bands and choruses from both the middle and high schools.

Music performances begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 9 p.m., alternating between the Robert A. Lee Auditorium and gymnasium. Four featured concerts will include the middle school band spring concert, middle school choral spring concert, high school band pops concert and the high school choral spring concert.

Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition

Four Kenston High School artists had artwork selected for exhibit at the 2016 Ohio Governors Youth Art Exhibition being held in Columbus through May 22. Hannah Johnson, Samantha Kuckoleck and Garrett Rosinski will have their art displayed in the State Department of Education.

Other students with artwork recognized earning regional awards were: Erin Javorsky, Jessica Garrison, Anna Soryal, Madison Spicuzza, Kelsey Bishop, Madison Thomas, Matthew Ballard, Emma Balunek, Hannah Johnson, Bre Kramer, Garrett Rosinski and Olivia Taylor.

High school art teachers are Mrs. Liz Bibza, Mr. Todd Malkus, Mrs. Andie Quinn and Mrs. Liz Vejar-Olwert. Selection for participation in this exhibition begins with over 11,000 entries from 15 regions statewide with only 2,500 selected for state judging. State jurors select 300 pieces for the actual exhibition.

The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition is dedicated to the educational and artistic advancement of our talented young people in the state of Ohio. The exhibition is open to all of Ohio’s 1,112 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education. Their purpose is to provide all budding young artists of the state with opportunities to advance their talent, whether that be through scholarships or simply experiencing the process of entering their work in a competition. The exhibition is a valuable incentive for our young people; it encourages an appreciation for the arts throughout Ohio and reflects the fine quality of art instruction and talent that exist in the state.

Art Awards

Thirty-six Kenston High School students have had 70 pieces of artwork selected for the annual Lake and Geauga County Secondary Art Awards. Categories represented include photography, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, painting, printmaking, drawing and mixed media. Judges for the show were local artists and/or former art educators from the area. Artwork was judged using the following awards: Best in Show, Best in Grade, Judges, Blue Ribbon, Gold Seal and Honorable Mention.

Kenston High School artists were recognized with the following special awards: Best of Show 9-12 to Samantha Kukoleck; Best of Grade 12 to Garrett Rosinski; Best of Grade 10 to Madison Spicuzza; and Judges honors to Anna Soryal and Madison Spicuzza. Hannah Johnson was also recognized with a scholarship from the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Blue ribbons were awarded to Matt Ballard, Macie Biermann, Kelsey Bishop, Katie Blazek, Kelly Deak, Matthew Eichelberger, Jessica Garrison, Becky Hiros, Erin Javorsky, Hannah Johnson, Samantha Kukoleck, Garrett Rosinski, Anna Soryal, Lydia Staudenbaur and Olivia Taylor.

Gold seal honors were awarded to Matt Ballard, Erica Bel?, Kelsey Bishop, Katie Blazek, Sarah Eshelman, Bre Kramer, Jenna Kumnick, Sarah Moss, Mya Ober, Anthony Palazzi, Heaven Rondo, Garrett Rosinski, Sarah Spehn, Madison Spicuzza, Lydia Staudenbaur, Olivia Taylor and Caroline Ware.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Erica Bel?, Eva Brinkman-Sull, Ava Bumbu, Elizabeth Burr, Loren Gormley, Becky Hiros, Jenna Kumnick, Savana Lamarca, Sarah Moss, Logan Petrie, Zoe Rice, Jeren Schroeder, Ryan Silk, Olivia Taylor and Caroline Ware.

KHS Science Olympiad

Congratulations to the Kenston High School Science Olympiad team for placing 10th at the state tournament held at The Ohio State University on April 9. Forty of the top teams in the state competed.

The following students received recognition in their specific event: Air Trajectory – Austin Borland and Ian Gray, second place; Game On Luke Ballard and William Parsons, second place; Electric Vehicle – Ryan Sauder and Sam Riley, fifth place; Geologic Mapping Austin Borland and Ashley Dvorak, fifth place; and Write It Do It Mara Cass, Emma Edwards, fifth place.

KMS Science Olympiad

The Kenston Middle School Science Olympiad team completed their season with a 16th place finish at the state tournament held at The Ohio State University on April 9. They competed against the top 40 teams in the state.

Placing in the top 10 in their events were: Annika Markoff and Anna Snyder Invasive Species, fourth place; Annika Markoff and Alex Laidman Anatomy, fourth place; Anna Snyder and Mac Snyder Fossils, seventh place; Alex Ensign and Andrew Lauer Meteorology, ninth place; Matthew Fantauzzo and William Skladany Hovercraft, ninth place; Sage Edwards and Nya Ku Hovercraft, 10th place and Anna Ortner and Anna Snyder Air Trajectory, 10th place.

Graduation Video

Graduation is just around the corner. The high school needs the community’s help in gathering photographs of the Class of 2016 students during their Kenston school career, grades kindergarten through 12, for inclusion in a slideshow video shown during graduation on May 19.

The school would like to include photos of every student’s favorite Kenston moments such as the first day of school, the Letter People, Field Days, Business Day, Spirit Week, athletics, class trips and more.

To receive a copy of graduation and the senior video, order forms will be available in May on the Kenston website, in the Guidance Office and during commencement. The cost is $25.
