Franklin B. Walter Award

Senior Corban Joyce has been honored with The Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award. The program was established in 1990 by the Ohio Educational Service Center Association to recognize an outstanding senior student from each of the 88 counties within Ohio.

Corban has attended Kenston schools since kindergarten. He is ranked No. 1 out of 259 seniors in the class of 2015 and will graduate summa cum laude. Named an AP Scholar with Distinction, Corban has taken 11 Advanced Placement courses, earning straight A’s throughout his entire high school career.

He maintains a 4.4 GPA and has received an academic letter by earning departmental awards in AP World History, French and Honors Pre-Calculus.

Corban is a member of the varsity soccer team and lacrosse club. He is a co-president of the senior class, French Club co-vice president and member of the Trivia Club.

He is currently manager on duty at the Golf Dome and volunteers as a youth counselor for Kenston Community Education Soccer Camp and Food for Friends.

He plans to get pursue an undergraduate degree in engineering.

All Academic

Congratulations to the students who earned All Academic honors for 2014-15 winter sports. To be selected for this award students must have a cumulative average after seven semesters of 3.25 GPA or better and have lettered in their sport for two years.

Basketball student athletes were James Artale, Carrington D’Angelo, Charles Ellis, Abigail Randall, Bernie Porter and Jeremy Wyers. Gymnasts Dominique Kestranek and Brooke Mostar were honored.

Ice Hockey student athletes Kenneth Holland, Jason Kantra, Jack Javorsky and Ethan Whiteford earned All Academic honors. Cheerleader Brianna Koniar was honored with an All Academic award.

Swimming and dive team members honored with All Academic awards were Sydney Braverman, John Coming, Halle D’Amico, Michael Jeromin, Sophie Kocheff, Kayla Korenowski, Tiffani Mattson and Victor Vitale.

Youth Art Exhibition

Four Kenston High School artists’ artwork was selected for exhibit at the 2015 Ohio Governors Youth Art Exhibition in Columbus through May 14. Matthew Ballard, Rebecca Hiros, Melanie Formica and Garrett Rosinski have their art displayed in the Rhodes Office Tower in Columbus.

Other students with artwork recognized with regional awards were: Vanessa Allen, Matthew Ballard, Katie Blazek, Natalie Cserhati, Halle D’Amico, Melanie Formica, Rebecca Hiros, Samantha Kukoleck, Nicole Lamont, Andrew Most, Garrett Rosinski and Euneta Walker.

High school art teachers are Mrs. Liz Bibza, Mr. Todd Malkus, Mrs. Andie Quinn and Mrs. Liz Vejar-Olwert. Selection for participation in this exhibition begins with over 11,000 entries from 15 regions statewide with only 2,500 selected for state judging. State jurors select 300 pieces for the actual exhibition.

The Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition is dedicated to the educational and artistic advancement of our talented young people in the state of Ohio. The exhibition is open to all of Ohio’s 1,112 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education. Their purpose is to provide all budding young artists of the state with opportunities to advance their talent, whether that be through scholarships or simply experiencing the process of entering their work in a competition.

The exhibition is a valuable incentive for our young people; it encourages an appreciation for the arts throughout Ohio and reflects the fine quality of art instruction and talent which exist in our state.

Juried Art Show

Vanessa Allen, Samantha Kukoleck, Andrew Most and Euneta Walker participated in the Beachwood Arts Council Juried High School Invitational Art Show featuring the artwork of 32 Cleveland area schools.

Art Awards

Over 75 Kenston High School students have had their artwork selected for the annual Lake and Geauga County Secondary Art Awards. Categories represented include photography, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, painting, printmaking, drawing and mixed media.

Judges for the show were local artists and/or former art educators from the area. Artwork was judged using the following awards: Scholarship/Cash Award, Blue Ribbon, Gold Seal and Honorable Mention.

Lakeland Community College Fine Art Faculty Awards were given to Betsey Clark.

Kenston High School artists were recognized with the following: $500 talent grant – Halle D’Amico; $300 Talent Grant and cash awards to Melanie Formica and Garrett Rosinski; $200 talent grant to Matt Ballard, Erica Belfi and Andrew Most.

Judges honors were given to Melanie Formica for Best of Show, Erica Belfi and Megan Herbruck for Best of Geauga County” with judges awards being given to Andrew Most and Samantha Kukoleck.

Blue ribbons were awarded to the top quarter of the Gold Seal including the following students: Halle D’Amico, Samantha Kukoleck, Nicole Lamont, Brian Larkin-Gero, Olivia Mathis, Andrew Most, Landon Ritterling, Garrett Rosinski, Olivia Taylor and Euneta Walker.

Earning a Gold Seal for the top half in the Honorable Mention category were Vanessa Allen, Matt Ballard, Erica Belfi, Macie Biermann, Melanie Formica, Becky Hiros, Samantha Kukoleck, Emily Lamb, Calla Martin, Olivia Mathis, Emily Nichols, Marie Rankin, Landon Ritterling, Jennifer Smith, Lydia Staudenbaur, Olivia Taylor, Euneta Walker, Ian Whitelock and Lauren Zucker.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Matthew Ballard, Katherine Baumgartner, Kelsey Bishop, Natalie Cserhati, Samantha Cumley, Emma Dicker, Melanie Formica, Rebecca Hiros, Makenzie Kless, Brian Kovach, Emily Lamb, Nicole Lamont, Leah Latterner, Sam Layman, Calla Martin, Taylor Martin, Kevin Matthews, Alex Milner, Luke Ostoyic, Rebecca Parker, Marie Rankin, Lydia Staudenbaur and Olivia Taylor.

Rotary Speech Contest

Congratulations to junior Belle Puckett who represented the Chagrin Valley Rotary in the district level Four Way Speech Contest. Belle was one of the top five competitors, earning honorable mention. She will present her speech at the state Rotary meeting on April 25.

KMS Science Olympiad

Please congratulate all the KMS Science Olympiad team members who competed at the state competition held at The Ohio State University this past weekend. The team finished another stellar season with a 12th place finish out of 40 teams.

The following students received recognition in their specific event: Entomology Anna Snyder, second place; Experimental Design Cassandra Berlin, Ainsley Bradbury and Anna Snyder, third place; Solar System McKenna Benjamin, sixth place; Meteorology McKenna Benjamin, sixth place; Potions & Poisons Kevin Edwards, Kelcey Henrikson, Rebecca Johnson and Anna Ortner; eighth place; and Green Generation Cassandra Berlin, eighth place.

Free Recycling Event

The Kenston Technology Department and Green Wave Computer Recycling will host a free electronics recycling event on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kenston High School. Drop-off is in the bus loop behind the high school.

Graduation Video

Graduation is just around the corner. The high school needs the community’s help in gathering photographs of the Class of 2015 students during their Kenston school career, grades kindergarten through 12, for inclusion in a slideshow video shown during graduation on May 21.

The school would like to include photos of every student’s favorite Kenston moments such as the first day of school, the Letter People, Celebration of Me, athletics and class trips. Please send photos to Kenston High School, Senior Video, Attn: Mrs. Hanzak, 9500 Bainbridge Road, Chagrin Falls, OH 44023 or email digital images to graduation.video@kenstonapps.org, with Graduation Video Photos in the subject line. Any pictures that one shares should include the student’s name printed on the back of the picture. To have the pictures returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Please submit the pictures no later than May 1.

To receive a copy of graduation and the senior video, order forms will be available in May on the Kenston website, in the Guidance Office and during commencement. The cost is $22.

District Art Show

The community is invited to celebrate Kenston Schools 44th annual District Student Art Show on April 28 from 6-9 p.m., with a gallery opening from 6-7 p.m., and April 29 and 30 from 6-9 p.m. at Kenston High School, 9500 Bainbridge Road.

The art show will feature a variety of student artwork from all grade levels, including work inspired by famous artists and other cultures, wood and scrap sculptures, graphic design, mixed media illustrations, portraits and landscapes.

Kenston Local Schools are committed to locating, identifying and evaluating all students with disabilities from age 3 through 22.
