KMS Power of the Pen
Four Kenston Middle School Power of the Pen team seventh-graders and eighth-graders qualified and competed in the Regional Power of the Pen Tournament at Hudson Middle School.
Out of the 90 seventh graders who competed, Aubrey Taylor placed eighth and Annika Markoff placed ninth. Additionally, Aubrey was selected as the “Best of the Best” for her winning story, “Second Thoughts”; her writing will be published in the 2015 “Book of Winners.” Both girls were among the 34 total seventh-grade contestants who advanced to the state tournament.
Out of 87 eighth-graders, Christa Niemann placed 16th and also advanced to the state tournament.
Ovations Awards
Kenston’s Center Stage was honored by the Geauga Council for Arts and Culture at the 13th annual Ovation Awards for area high school musicals.
The format this year is different from years past. Rather than focus on competition between area schools where the programs are widely disparate in budget, facilities and available students, the program this year focused on honoring “the best” in each school’s production. Area directors agreed to see two other school’s shows and recognized the best elements in acting, music, technical theater and a category of their choosing.
“Mary Poppins” was honored with the following awards: Technical Achievement to John Coming for his work with animation; Music Award to Will McKnight for his vocal performance as Bert; Acting Award to Lauren Zucker for her portrayal of Mary Poppins; and Outstanding Show Stopping Number for “Step In Time” to the ensemble.
Freshman Brendan Roche was recognized as the MVP of the show for his work on the stage crew and set construction.
