National Merit Semifinalists
The National Merit Scholarship Corp. has announced that Kenston seniors Mara Cass and Bailey Mulhern were named semifinalists in the National Merit Achievement and National Merit Scholarship academic competitions. Approximately 16,000 semifinalists were named in the 61st annual National Merit Program.
Kenston’s Commended Scholars are Alexis Biggin-Thurman, Natalie Kusner and Hannah Richardson.
High school seniors across the country entered the National Merit Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screening for 1.5 million applicants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, including the highest scoring entrants in each state.
The National Merit semifinalist will compete for 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered in the spring.

School Bus Safety
Ohio has laws that require all vehicles to come to a halt when a school bus has its stop sign out and its red lights flashing. These signals indicate that children are getting on or off the bus.
When one is sharing the road with school buses, remember these rules: Do not pass a school bus until the red lights and signals are turned off; always stop when traveling in the same direction as the bus; and never pass on the right side of the bus. Besides being illegal, this is where children enter and exit.
CCP Students Visit Lakeland
On Aug. 28, the College Credit Plus (CCP) English 1110 class taught by teacher Annie Brust attended a library orientation at Lakeland Community College. KHS librarian Sue Subel was also part of the field trip and met with Thomas Hyland, Lakeland’s coordinator of library instruction. The purpose of the trip was to introduce KHS students to the college library resources and provide instruction in how to effectively use these databases to retrieve information for their class.
Students learned that to be college and career ready means learning how to search effectively in a college library using databases, and more specifically, using scholarly journals for their research. College professors expect incoming students to use the scholarly journals that experts use.
The skills that these students learned while using actual college level resources will be invaluable to them as they embark on their college careers. College libraries can be intimidating; these students have a head start at being research savvy.
