The Gift of Knowledge
Chagrin Valley Rotarians recently distributed dictionaries to each Timmons Elementary School third-grader. The Chagrin Valley Rotary annually provides students with a personal dictionary of their very own. A dictionary is one of the most powerful reference tools that a child can own. It’s usefulness goes beyond the spellings, pronunciations and definitions it lists by enabling a student to solve problems as they arise and develop their reading, writing and creative thinking abilities.

School Closing Information
Fall is in the air, but winter is just around the corner. I understand that the decision to close school or offer a two-hour delay impacts your family. I agree that the best education occurs in the classroom with our teachers. As the person responsible for the final decision to open or close school, the safety of your child is my top priority.
State law now allows schools to change to an hour-based schedule eliminating the need for calamity days. Kenston has over 10 days worth of instructional hours beyond the state minimum. At this time, we do not anticipate the need to makeup days or use Blizzard Bags for cancelled school days.
I will continue to work with the local road departments, law enforcement and school personnel to carefully analyze all relevant factors before closing school. I strive to make the decision to close by 5:30 a.m. or earlier. We will then notify TV stations, post information on the website, contact students and staff via the automated calling system, Tweet @KenstonSchools and post on the School Closing Hotline at 440-564-2134.
Safety Drills
Ohio Revised Code increased the number of safety/lockdown drills from one to three. Students across the district have now participated in their first lockdown drill and refresher of ALiCE training. ALiCE enhances traditional lockdown with common sense and proactive responses that could help protect students and staff.
ALiCE is an acronym that stands for Alert, Lockdown, inform, Counter and Evacuate. All students and staff members have been trained on barricade and other tactics to distract and confuse an intruder.
