National Merit Finalist Named
Chagrin Falls High School senior Meghan Judge was recently notified that she has qualified as a National Merit finalist. In order to receive this distinction, students must replicate their test scores, receive an endorsement by the school and complete a written essay.
She is now among 15,000 seniors who have been identified as finalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. This nationwide pool of finalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. These students have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships this spring worth more than $36 million.
CMS Spelling Bee
Chagrin Falls Middle School recently announced a champion for its annual spelling bee. To prepare for the big event, the entire school participated in round one, which was a spelling bee test given in all of the English classes. From this test, 35 students qualified for round two and were named spelling bee finalists. The entire school watched these 35 finalists compete in the spelling bee held in the Performing Arts Center, which went through 12 rounds before a winner was announced.
Rem Weber and Madigan Copley (the school’s 2012 winner) were the last two standing and battled word after word. The chance for a winner arose when Rem misspelled his word, and Maddy was given the word “rheumatism,” which she easily spelled to win the bee.
She will be moving on to the county level, which will take place at 9 a.m. March 2 at Cuyahoga Community College. The winner of that bee will advance to further rounds, ending at The Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May. The staff, teachers and students at the Middle School wish Madigan the best of luck in the next round.
