Congressional Art Award

Congressman David P. Joyce recently announced that junior Isabel Hamilton won the People’s Choice Award in the 14th District Congressional Art Competition.

Isabel’s award-winning digital photograph titled “Strašljivo,” which means “scary,” features the frightful, but friendly monsters of Kurentovanje, a celebration in Cleveland’s Slovenian-American community to scare away winter just before the start of Lent.

According to a press release from Congressman Joyce, Isabel’s photograph will hang in his Mentor office for the next year. Isabel’s photography teacher is art department chairpersonGeorge Yaniga.

Freshmen Retreat

On Sept. 2, 170 Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin freshmen focused on the school’s core value of community by helping each other tackle the challenges of the low-ropes course on NDCL’s beautifully wooded campus.

Seniors from the Certified Peer Educator program served as retreat leaders to break open scripture readings after each challenge activity. The seniors helped the freshmen reflect on the power of Christian community so that they can support each other for the next four years of high school.

The day ended with a joyful celebration of Mass with Chaplain Father Jim Caddy, who encouraged the freshmen to build relationships with God and each other throughout their four years of high school.

“Build a positive, caring attitude with the members of your class,” Father Caddy said. “Always keep Jesus at your side and remember that all of us here have your back.”

Director of Campus Ministry Halle McKeon coordinated the retreat with campus ministers Alexis Danch ’15 and Tom Conkey.
