Retired Staff Sgt. Speaks at NDCL

On Nov. 6, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (NDCL) welcomed retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne Division to an all-school assembly, where he shared his powerful story of resilience and the motto of his foundation: “Never Give Up, Never Quit.”

On April 10, 2012, during his third tour in Afghanistan, Mills was critically injured by an IED, resulting in the loss of portions of both his legs and arms. Despite these life-altering injuries, he became one of only five quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive. His journey of recovery has been marked by immense courage, support from his unit, the prayers of thousands and dedicated care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

In September 2013, Mills and his wife Kelsey founded the Travis Mills Foundation, which supports post-9/11 recalibrated veterans and their families. Through various programs, the foundation helps veterans overcome physical and emotional obstacles, strengthen their families, and experience well-deserved rest and relaxation. The centerpiece of their work is a nationally recognized retreat located in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine. The all-inclusive, barrier-free retreat provides veterans and their families with an expenses-paid experience where they engage in adaptive activities, bond with fellow veteran families and enjoy Maine’s great outdoors.

Mills’ speech at NDCL resonated deeply with students and staff, emphasizing the power of perseverance, community and strength. His message encouraged everyone to face challenges head-on and support one another, reinforcing that with determination, any adversity can be overcome.

NDCL students contributed to the cause by volunteering to answer phones for the Veterans Day cash raffle on Nov. 8. The annual event, hosted by News Radio WTAM 1100, raises funds for the Travis Mills Foundation. The telethon invited listeners to purchase raffle tickets, with proceeds benefiting the foundation.
