Legal Lions Head to States

For the third consecutive year, NDCL’s Mock Trial Team has advanced to the Ohio Mock Trial State Competition.
The return trip to the state capital comes after the Lions won both trials in regional competition at the Lake County Courthouse on Feb. 16. NDCL’s prosecution beat Mentor High School, and the Lions’ defense won its case against Perry High School.
Judges named senior Antonia Mysyk as the best attorney in both trials. Junior Hannah Taylor won the best witness award in the trial against Mentor.

The Lions will now prepare to compete March 8 and 9 at the Franklin County Courthouse. The state finals will be argued in the Ohio Statehouse on March 10.

Believe in Ohio Awards

Following his Career Week keynote address for NDCL sophomores and juniors, Ryan White, of INSIGHTtoPROFIT, presented awards to five students for their submissions in the Northeastern Ohio Innovates Business Plan competition.
The competition challenges students to generate creative entrepreneurial ideas for a product or service and then to develop their ideas by writing complete business plans. This year, 28 students developed their plans under the guidance of business teacher Nancy Vondrak in her Business in the 21st Century class.

NDCL students were selected for their innovative creations and plans.

Senior Martina Katic was recognized as a first place award winner for her creation of MoodSwing, a music app that senses one’s emotions and creates a personal playlist based on the mood that one is feeling. Martina received $250 cash prize.

Antique Charters, created by senior David Mele, is a charter service with an air fleet of antique aircrafts that will bring back the glamour of the 1950s – ‘70s air travel when service was great and the meals were appetizing. David was awarded second prize and $150.

The third place award winner, junior Michael Matchett will receive a cash prize of $100 for IDDPS, the Intelligent Distracted Driver Prevention System that monitors a driver’s hand placement on the steering wheel.

In addition, two NDCL student creations received two honorable mention awards. Senior Reagan Hoyt created ChartRa medical record app that will work across multiple hospital systems to store, send and receive medical records; and the team of seniors Austin Craver and Zach Zienka created Chewy Penzpens with flavored tips made of rubber that users can safely chew without damaging their teeth.
