NASPA Certified Peer Educators
Ninety NDCL seniors became the first high school students in Ohio to be certified as peer educators by the National Association of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) during a commissioning ceremony on Sept. 17.
The CPE program provides our students with foundational-level skills to empower them as stronger leaders, better role models, more effective advocates and more productive team members. Ordinarily, NASPA only works with college students, but NDCL health aide and wellness coordinator Pete DeMichelepersuaded the organization to include NDCL students in the nationally recognized program.
All-Time Highs on ACTs
NDCL’s Class of 2018 proudly posted the highest overall ACT scores in school history, according to score reports compiled from all exams taken by the 161 members of our most recent graduating class.
Recent graduates posted mean (average) scores of 24.9 in math, 25.5 in science, 26.1 in English and 27 in reading. The ACT reports scores on a scale from 1-36. National averages in all subjects range from 20-21.
The average results of NDCL’s top 25 percent were even more impressive: 31.3 in math, 31.7 in science, 34.2 in English, and 33.7 in reading.
To put NDCL’s performance in perspective, Principal Joseph A. Waler noted that the U.S. Department of Education sets a mean ACT score of 24.3 to identify the top 15 percent of all high schools in the nation.
“Every single one of our scores exceeds that challenging performance standard,” he said.
“The Class of 2018’s record-setting performance on the ACT reflects our students’ hard work as well as the expertise and zeal of the talented professionals on our faculty,” Waler explained.
“Our top-notch teachers have worked tirelessly to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment with research-based benchmarks for college readiness. Their collaborative efforts on late-start Mondays, on blended learning days and in countless after-school meetings have made the decisive difference in equipping our graduates for success. By challenging and supporting our students to achieve at higher levels in reading, math, and other academic skills, we are opening up doors of opportunity for them in college, career and life.”
