Believe in Ohio Awards
On May 12, Mr. Jim Montaquila presented awards on behalf of Believe in Ohio at NDCL’s Pat and Janet O’Brien Center for Performing Arts. The STEM commercialization program is sponsored by the Ohio Academy and challenges students to become leaders in Ohio’s innovation economy by focusing their STEM learning through an entrepreneurial lens and mindset.
Science teacher Kelly Maduri, who teaches the honors chemistry course, coordinated the students’ participation in the Believe in Ohio competition.
First place winners were juniors Michael Louard and Gregory Owendoff for their plan for inexpensive, lightweight and easy-to-assembly modularly assembled panel housing for poor people in developing countries.
Second place honors went to juniors Hailey Oppenlander and Hannah Junglas for Slumber System, a pillow that uses binaural beat technology to help one enter into a deeper state of sleep faster. Earning third place were juniors Olivia DeJohn and Antonia Mysyk for a universal water fountain filtration attachment that allows users to purify water flowing from any water fountain.
Juniors Halle Sarkisian and Elizabeth Walsh won fourth place for Compact Cosmetics, a combined foundation and makeup brush system that uses dimethicone cross polymer and emollient to hydrate and smooth skin.
National Merit Recognition
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced that juniors Lillian Martin, Hailey Oppenlander and Gregory Owendoff are among only 50,000 out of 1.5 million students nationwide to be recognized for achievement on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude /National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
With their outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT, Lillian, Hailey and Gregory are qualified as National Merit commended students, semifinalists or finalists. Those prestigious designations will be announced in fall 2017.
Senior Honors Ceremony
NDCL’s class of 2017 has earned nearly $16 million in scholarships and grants over the next four years from colleges and universities nationwide, Principal Joseph A. Waler proudly announced during the Senior Honors Ceremony.
“The scholarships offered to our seniors prove how their hard work, the professional expertise of our teachers and counselors, and the love and expectations of their parents come together to catch the attention — and the scholarship dollars — of colleges and universities nationwide,” Waler said.
The ceremony recognized dozens of seniors for their scholastic and other accomplishments over the past four years, including seniors Thomas Carballada and Brendan Hyslop, who earned the Top Scholar Award for having the highest grade point averages in the class.
For exemplifying the mission of NDCL in their lives, seniors Olivia Gorom, Stephanie Hetki, Christopher Jerme and Jacob Liptow received the Living the Truth in Love Award. Classmates Jack Ina and Madeline Spicer were honored with the Sisters of Notre Dame Distinguished Graduate Award. Their names will be inscribed in a book of recognition at the SND Motherhouse in Rome.
