NDCL Receives National Wildlife Recognition
Pierce Thomas, a senior at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School, joins Mary Phillips, former alumna and senior director of Wildlife Gardening, at the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) to accept the plaque, which recognizes NDCL’s campus as a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
Pierce was pleasantly surprised to receive a personal invitation to tour the NWF headquarters in Virginia and be taped for a promotional video. He said that bringing his school’s campus into compliance with the requirements for a wildlife habitat was actually pretty easy and encourages other schools to do the same.
“It’s important to have a water source, nut and berry food-sources, nectar and birdhouses to be good stewards for local wildlife. Including indigenous milkweed plants also allowed NDCL to become a Certified Monarch Waystation,” Pierce explains. “It’s actually very easy to do a small thing that can make a big difference to the wildlife and pollinators in our area. I’d also like to encourage high school students to spread awareness by participate in NWF’s Garden for Wildlife Photo Contest which ends Oct. 11 and offers a $1,000 grand prize.”
