For the first time in more than 70 years, Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday falls on the same day.

Embrace the Love

For the first time in more than 70 years, Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday falls on the same day. For Catholics as well as Christians, Ash Wednesday is an important holy day in the liturgical calendar. It signals the beginning of Lent, the 40-day period before Easter Sunday.

To observe the significance and solemnity of Ash Wednesday, NDES celebrated Valentine’s Day on Feb. 13, which happens to also be Mardi Gras. Students dressed up in their Valentine’s attire and celebrated with parties and in-class activities.

For the Love of Math

On Feb. 10, 20 fifth- and sixth-graders joined with other students within the community to solve math problems at Chardon Middle School. Led by math teachers Lisa Petryzyn and Cathy Zink, students met after school for two months to prepare for the math contest. Equipped with protractors, pencils, calculators and the sheer joy of math, students solved mind-boggling math problems.

NDES sent five winning teams – bringing back one trophy, two blue ribbons and two red ribbons.

100 days of Loving School

Kindergartners celebrated 100 days of school. In Mrs. Jennifer Wachob’s class students worked on projects that depicted quantities of 100 and presented them to the class. In Mrs. Elizabeth Looman’s class, students dressed up as “mini-senior citizens” and participated in “100” type activities.
