Destination Imagination Competition
On March 3, NDES participated in the annual Destination Imagination regional competition held at Barberton Middle School. Representing NDES were two teams. Taking third place, Mrs. Wojnar’s Fresh Avocados competed in the improv area. Mrs. White’s Triangular Circles competed in the structural/engineering area and received second place recognition.
The competition focused on several different areas including technical, scientific, fine arts, improvisational and structural learning. Over a course of several months, students employed critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork to create and develop a solution to a problem and present it at the annual competition.
No Toy Left Behind
Mrs. Davis’ fifth-grade STEM students recently learned that toys can all be upcycled and made into new toys. With a little bit of imagination and the engineering design process, students designed and built prototypes of a “new” toy with old parts, making the old new again.
Brain Day at Lakeland CC
In hopes of igniting a cerebral spark among area seventh-graders, Lakeland Community College hosted its third annual Brain Day. Seventh-graders Jonathan Ratka and Contessa Wilson were invited to participate in the college’s observance of Brain Awareness Week on March 2.
A worldwide celebration of the brain that brings together scientists, families, schools and communities, the day included lectures, demonstrations and many hands-on activities such as dissection of a sheep’s brain and an obstacle course that simulates a brain impaired by alcohol.
