7th-Grade Scientists Recognized
After competing at the NDES Science Fair in January, seventh-graders Meghan Bhanoo and Amy Gabrovsek placed second at the NEOSEF at John Carroll University and received superior ratings at the district science fair at University of Akron.
On May 13, Meghan and Amy advanced to the State Science Day at The Ohio State University where they were recognized with superior ratings.
Amy, an animal enthusiast, researched and proved that changes in a dog’s diet would affect the chemistry of its blood, while Meghan, in the physics category, proved her hypothesis on the effects of pressure on the bounce of a ball. They both earned scholarships to science camps and numerous awards.
For more than 60 years, State Science Day is the pinnacle of student originated, inquiry-based science education for Ohio’s students. It is the academic equivalent of a state athletic championship and one of the largest of its kind in the nation. Drawing upon a base of over 35,000 students from more than 1,000 local school science fairs, over 1,100 students in grades 5–12 are evaluated on their scientific research and communication skills.
Students Harness the Wind
Kindergarten and first-grade students are not only learning basic reading, writing and arithmetic, but harnessing electric currents and wind power in Mrs. Halle Davis’ STEM class.
Kindergarten students are taking ABC’s one step further by engineering 3-D letters into keys on a keyboard. With Makey Makey, everyday objects become tools of inspiration as students learn and apply the basic fundamentals of electricity.
In first grade, students are exploring the simplest and least expensive sources of renewable energy by using wind power to test the design and construction of “sail cars.” Armed with drills and hammers, students applied engineering design process and reinforced the scientific method by building little-wheeled carts equipped with masts and sails that are powered by moving air generated from a box fan.
Walkathon and Field Day
It was a beautiful day for the annual NDES Day and Walkathon.
Beginning with a pep rally, announced by wallkathon experience winners, Jaxon and Jaiden Mangelluzzi, students received a surprise visit from ND Schools – Tuffy the Lion.
Activity stations provided lots of fun for children in grades K-5, while students in grades 6-8 played a game of kickball in honor of Sam Szabo, a beloved NDES student who lost his life to leukemia.
After lunch, everyone put on their walking shoes for the mile walkathon, which raised over $34,000 to support special programs at NDES.
The school is very grateful to the donors and volunteers for making the day a great success.
