Networking Night Event
St. Mary School has a unique community of small businesses and entrepreneurs. The school came together for its first ever Networking Night event to allow family businesses to learn from one another and support each other. St. Mary School parent Nate Crosby, of Crosby Advisory Group, talked to business owners about ways he has found to market his business and ideas that may be helpful to them.
St. Mary School has created a link to a list of family-owned businesses on the school website to help get the word out. In addition, the group is working to create a community that works to help one another and is planning to expand efforts on to reach the entire parish of St. Mary Chardon.
Drop Everything and Read
Right to Read Week is a specific tradition to the state of Ohio. Sponsored by the Ohio Council International Reading Association (OCIRA), the statewide program is in its 39th year. Last week, St. Mary students were able to celebrate reading and literacy along with the time honored tradition of celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
St. Mary students were told to have a book handy at all times of the week and be ready to “Drop Everything And Read.” Some students were caught hanging up their coats in the morning, some were in the halls, but when they heard the announcement, they stopped wherever they were and read.
“Dress as Your Favorite Book Character” day brought out many familiar faces. From Cindy Lou Who to Hermione, Pete the Cat to Pippi Longstocking, generations of characters paraded the halls for the day.
Celebrating Ohio Right to Read Week is one way to acknowledge the importance of reading in society. The Ohio Council for the International Reading Association that promotes the event says, “Reading skills, essential across the curriculum, improve lives. By sustained silent reading, by reading to others, by discussing the books we read and enjoy, we encourage students to develop lifetime reading habits. We share our love of reading!”
School libraries around the state of Ohio come together to create a love of reading in students. They try to stress the importance of reading as an essential component to helping achieve goals as students grow and develop.
