Legal Lions Head to States
For the second consecutive year, NDCL’s Mock Trial Team has advanced to the Ohio Mock Trial State Competition. Only 27 high schools throughout Ohio qualified for the state finals in Columbus.
The return trip to the state capital comes after the Lions’ strong performance in regional trials at the Old Lakeside Courthouse in Cleveland on Feb. 10. Judges in that competition named Tom Fogarty and Antonia Mysyk as best attorneys and Briana Cowman and Emily Callahan as best witnesses.
NDCL Educators Present at State Conference
Five NDCL educators were among the featured presenters at the Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts Annual Conference in Columbus in early February.
Technology coach Giovanna Orlando, English teachers Victoria Frabotta and Katie Ours, and English department chairperson Beth Walsh-Moorman shared how they have integrated technology into Socratic seminars, which are thought-provoking, open-ended formal discussions based on specific texts.
In another session, Mrs. Walsh-Moorman and media specialist Amy Myers presented NDCL’s innovative Framework for Information and Research Skills for Today and Tomorrow (FIRSTT), a research and information literacy curriculum for freshmen. FIRSTT involves collaboration between the media specialist and subject-area teachers to teach and embed research and information skills as students complete their regular class assignments.
More than 250 educators from across Ohio, including the entire NDCL English Department, attended this year’s conference.
