Christmas in August
While studying World War I in Ms. Victoria Thompson’s military history elective, students learned about a unique Christmas truce that occurred in 1914, just five months after the war began. The students read primary source accounts of what took place during the truces, such as soldiers playing football (soccer), exchanging stories of their families and loved ones and singing Christmas carols. Soldiers from both sides of the trenches came out to celebrate the holidays together. Students were then challenged to create a Christmas card where they assumed the role of a soldier who had been a part of the Christmas truce, noting the events of that day and what life in the trenches has been like thus far.
