Binocular Program
Mrs. Hollowell’s fifth-grade science class was treated to an astronomy binocular program last week. The Geauga Parks brought in volunteers to teach about the planets, stars and star dome, the class favorite. In the dome, the students learned stories from the Greeks, Romans and Native Americans, telling how different constellations were named.
Power Of The Pen
St. Helen School participated in the Power of the Pen, an interscholastic competition for young writers throughout Ohio. Approximately 200 junior high students from 15 area schools participated in the writing competition. Students write at the tournament in response to prompts, not known in advance and are judged on their creative writing skills
St. Helen students did exceptionally well at the competition. Chris Carter placed 13th among the eighth-grade group and Andrew Watts placed 10th among all seventh-grade writers.
Science Fair
St. Helen School held its annual science fair with 47 junior high science projects ranging from environmental science to medicine/health. This year’s science fair was an outstanding success with eight first place winners.
The winners will move on to compete at the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held at The Cleveland State University March 14-17. St. Helen students will compete against approximately 600 students from over 80 schools, discuss their projects with over 260 judges and compete for more than $20,000 in prizes.
