The Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF) takes place each spring at Cleveland State University to showcase seventh- through 12th-grade students from a seven-county area. Forty-four middle schools from the region sent their best projects to be judged at NEOSEF this year. Judges interviewed students on March 12 and awarded students based on overall performance in their category. In addition, representatives from dozens of science organizations considered projects for special awards.
St. Helen School had 10 students participate in NEOSEF this year. Kylie Hoenigman, Madeline Martin Kosier and Hannah Wojtasik earned honorable mention recognition for their projects. Madeline Martin Kosier was also presented with the William R. Sweet Award for Chemistry. Isabella Adair and Margaret Ruggeri were recognized with third place medals and ribbons. Students awarded with second place for their projects, include Grace Charmley, Paige Fisher, Lucy Joyce and Jack Murray.
In addition to her second place fair award, Lucy Joyce was presented with the second place Materials Project award by the Cleveland Chapter of the ASM International for her project on how changes in temperature effect the elasticity of rubber bands. Lucy received her prize at the organization’s March 26 meeting in Cleveland, where she had been invited to discuss her project with members prior to their regular meeting.
Joslyn Borah’s project, comparing hydroponic and aquaponic systems for food production processes, earned first place in the biology category and was also chosen as one of the two grand prize winners from all seventh- and eighth-grade projects entered this year. In addition, Borah’s project, “I Just Wet My Plants,” was recognized by two organizations – the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers and Cleveland Clinic’s Learner Research Institute – for special prizes.
