Handwriting Contest Winners

Congratulations to third-grader Josephine Misley and seventh-grader Mercedes Sustar who were named state grade-level winners in the Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest.  Each student received an engraved Zaner-Bloser state winner medallion and the school received a $200 Zaner-Bloser coupon.  Their teachers, Ms. Nicole Reichard and Mr. Patrick Gannon, will also receive an engraved Glass Diamond Award.

Approximately 275,000 students participated in this year’s contest. As state grade-level winners, Josephine and Mercedes will compete for a Grand National Champion title, which will take place in May.

Picnic and a Movie

On a sunny Friday afternoon, April 28, students in grades kindergarten through four enjoyed a picnic to culminate the One School One Book program that began in March. Following the picnic, blankets and chairs were moved into the St. Helen gymnasium, where everyone, including Chester the Cricket, enjoyed the movie.

Students Relive Colonial Life

Mrs. Marie Dash and her fifth-grade class brought colonial times to life as part of their social studies class. Students dressed up in colonial costumes and learned about the different occupations available to people during that time.

A Retirement To Remember

On May 2, students along with family and friends of Mrs. Mary Wanner celebrated her retirement with a Mass and special blessings. Mrs. Wanner began as a volunteer at St. Helen School 28 years ago and became a teacher aide in 1997.

Students presented Mary with flowers and shared their favorite memories of Mrs. Wanner in a booklet containing pictures of Mary and students from 1989 until now.
