Newbury Times Square

The morning of March 20, students at St. Helen School were welcomed at the school’s entrance that was transformed into Times Square and a school transformed into New York City, complete with a subway and China Town.

On March 19, a group of parents spearheaded by Mr. and Mrs. Gryzwinski decorated the hallways and atrium entrance in preparation for the One School, One Book program featuring Newbury Honor Book, “The Cricket in Times Squareby George Selden.

On Monday, Mrs. Dasch’s fifth-graders, who previously read the book, introduced St. Helen kindergarten through fourth-grade students to the main characters, including Chester Cricket and Mario, the Newsboy. Each child then received his or her very own copy of “The Cricket in Times Square” along with Lorna Doone cookies and a calendar for when each chapter is read by parents or teachers. There are trivia questions each day and more surprises in store for the students engaged in this great reading adventure.
