Focus on the Forest Floor
Third-grade students in Mrs. Merkle’s class recently spent the day investigating plants, animals and the environment of the forest floor at Holden Arboretum through the yearlong Growing Students in Science program.
The students returned to school buzzing with excitement and information about all of all the hands on activities of the day. They worked on incorporating English topics by using as many adjectives as possible to describe the environment.
Student Tyler Malloy told about a bird they encountered, “The wood thrush is a bird that has really bright blue eggs and a scary warning call.”
Students brought back not only excitement from their day, but also soil samples to compare with soil from the school grounds.
The yearlong partnership between St. Mary School and Holden Arboretum allows learning to continue past the day of their special trip and throughout their continued learning.
Visit to Mariapoch Shrine
Mother Theodora spoke to the junior high students during a visit to Mariapoch Shrine in Burton as a part of their religion curriculum for the year. Mariapoch is described as “one of the largest Hungarian Shrines in America and draws people from all over the United States and Canada.”
St. Mary Students brought prayers from the school to place at the feet of Our Lady after praying the Rosary.
