Helping Kids In Need

Coach Mare VonLindern’s physical education classes take on a new twist come December. Each student comes prepared not only to reach a physical challenge goal, but also to make a contribution to others.

St. Mary School has a long-standing tradition of helping a small town in Grahn, Ky., give their kids a happy Christmas. Toys are collected through the beginning of December and delivered down to Appalachia just in time for Christmas through the Toys for Appalachia program. Coach helps this program out by purchasing toys to donate herself and then allowing the students the chance to put in a toy each time they meet a goal in her class.

Coach VonLindern says, “It’s neat to see the kids get excited about helping others while working on their own goals.”

Kids are challenged to make free throws, run laps and other exercises related to their current unit of study.

Student Tyler Malloy could be heard cheering on his classmates saying, “Do it for the kids!”

All students get very excited to put a toy into the box knowing that it is going to someone else who needs it more than they do and that they have personally made a contribution. Coach truly provides the students a way to celebrate a happy and healthy Christmas.

Kindergarten Christmas Stories

Under the tree in the kindergarten classroom lays a pile of presents. Each day a child gets to pick one and open it. Inside the package is a different Christmas story that the students get to open and read each school day in December. It is fun to see the anticipation on their faces as each book is opened and they learn more about Christmas.
