Strong Emphasis on Technology

Gone are the days of Velcro calendars and laminated weather people that started the days of kindergartens past.

St. Mary School kindergarteners come together around an interactive whiteboard to practice not only their calendar skills, but also operations in technology use.

Kindergarten teacher Kara Passow can be heard giving verbal instructions to the children to click on the home page or switch tools throughout the morning meetings.

Students take turns using a stylus and other devices to highlight or enter information onto the board as called out by their fellow classmates.

“Multi-touch interactive display boards create opportunities for students to engage and solve problems together,” said Passow. “Anything we can do to help deliver engaging lessons and make standard curriculum exciting boosts collaboration amongst the students. Research has shown that a more integrated use of classroom technology will positively impact student learning and will help prepare our students for the next steps in life.”

In addition to the technological emphasis, kindergarteners work on math concepts such as money, time and place values during their morning calendar work. They even talk about the weather and cheer when they find snow in the forecast.
