Students Of The Month

The following students received the Student of the Month award for being model examples of the virtue of perseverance. Congratulations to all.

They are kindergartners Kaitlin Flick and Bridget Morgan; first-grader William Boehnlein; second-graders Kaitlyn Boggs and Riley Ford; third-grader Dillon Buzogany; fourth-grader Sophia Morano; fifth-grader Ethan McCaskey; sixth-grader Sara Boggs; seventh-grader Reese Schneider; and eighth-grader Maria Peters.

Student of the Month awards were also given to: Luke Rowan, art class; Sophia Doan, computer class; Marissa Vargo, library science; Annie Solomon, music class; Elizabeth Rodriguez, physical education; and Charlie Brock, enrichment class.

Float Takes 1st Place

The 86th annual Geauga County Maple Festival parade theme this year asked for “Hometown Maple Pride.” The St. Mary School float did not disappoint. With an oversized replica of the Geauga County Courthouse that just barely made the height restriction requirements, sap buckets and maple leaves, the parent volunteer creators knocked it out of the park.

Dave and Donna McCaskey, along with fellow parent Bill Eppich, constructed the float to help represent St. Mary School in the annual event. Each year the team comes together with parents, staff and students from the school to enter the parade and participate in the weekend’s festivities. This year, they also worked to spread the word to save the date for their own second annual St. Mary Parish Festival, which will take place July 31 through Aug. 2.

National Finalist Named

Elizabeth Rodriguez has been announced as one of six finalists competing in the Science and Engineering Division of the seventh annual University of Akron Rubber Band contest. She is one of 12 overall national finalists in the entire competition and will be competing against students from as far away as Alaska.

Elizabeth created BAM! – the Back Around Mailbox.

“The mailbox includes a hinge and rubber band that allows it to swing back into standing position after being hit by a snow plow,” said Ms. Rodriguez.

Students were required to not only submit their invention, but also an essay describing its purpose, how it works and who can benefit. Growing up in the snowbelt allowed Elizabeth to witness the great need for an invention like this. The BAM has now been shipped to Akron for final judging where winners will be announced May 22.

The Akron Global Polymer Academy of the University of Akron challenged local junior high students to design and create a working invention that incorporated at least one rubber band in their seventh annual Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors. Students were given the choice of competing in two separate divisions: arts and leisure or science and engineering.

The first place winner in each division will receive $1,000 and the remaining finalists will receive $50. The top four schools with the most student entries will also receive a $250 donation.
