Junior High Geography Fair
World news recently can make other cultures and countries seem like intimidating places to our youth. Social studies teacher Carla Solomon feels it’s more important than ever to educate our kids about the positive aspects of other cultures and how we can relate to them.
“Looking at current events makes students aware of what is going on in their world, what they can do to be a part of it and a part of changing it for the better,” says Mrs. Solomon.
She challenged her students to choose one country to explore in depth and then showcase at the school’s geography fair held last week. Students prepared posters, Power Point presentations, models and food to sample that represented their country of interest. Lower grade students were able to come and tour the countries of the world and listen to their junior high hosts describe each place they visited.
The geography fair not only allowed students to learn more about other countries, but also enabled them to teach younger students what they had learned during their research and pass the knowledge down.
