Thomas Edison Award

St. Mary School has received the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award of Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for the 2020-21 school year. It is one out of 45 schools in Ohio to receive the award.

The Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research has been presented to Ohio schools and teachers who stimulate student-focused, inquiry-based science education and extend STEM education beyond traditional classroom activities.

St. Mary School students in grades K-8 all participate in different science applied activities throughout the school year constructing, experimenting, testing and developing multiple functional prototypes. The school has consistently found new and exciting ways to incorporate STEM education into its school-wide curriculum. New challenges came with the implementation of COVID restrictions, but that is what STEM embodies, using teamwork and creativity to rethink what has been done before and make it work with new parameters in place. From the youngest students to those getting ready for high school next year, everyone at St. Mary School knows what STEM education can do.

During the school year the top 10 percent of the seventh- and eighth-grade classes were invited to compete at the district level. At the district competition, former eighth-grader Laney Mardula earned a “superior” ranking and was invited to compete at the state level.

St. Mary School looks forward to watching its students excel in STEM and is honored to have received the award.
