New Playground Coming

At Saint Mary School Chardon, a team of alumni, parents, teachers and junior high students came together to tear out the playground.

The process to install a new playground began four years ago when PTU started raising funds to replace the playground. Through multiple fundraisers that were organized and multiple generous donors from the church and school, money was set aside until enough was saved.

As a STEM school, the students played a big part in the planning. The junior high classes developed surveys for all of the students so that playground committee members would know what the students wanted in their new playground. Using Google Forms and age appropriate methods, data was collected and synthesized into a presentation.

The playground committee planned and organized bids for the construction of a new playground for the school and community. Snider Recreation Inc. won the bid to put in the new playground with the poured in place rubber ground covering, which is a safer alternative to the traditional mulch. Features of the playground that were requested by the students are a rock climbing wall, zip line and slides. Once the design was determined, Mrs. Allin’s seventh-grade class and Mrs. Tracy’s fourth-grade class made models of the new playground for the community to see during the school’s open house. The committee also let the students determine the final color scheme of the new playground. Blue and gray was the winning combination.

Drew Payto, chair for the playground committee, was pleased with the number of volunteers who came to help and with the efficiency that completed the task of removing the playground and concrete footings that held everything in place. With shovels, reciprocal saws, crowbars and earthmovers, the old playground was torn out to make room for the new playground. Alumnus Tom Jackson joined the team to help with this phase of the project.

The new playground will be installed July 30 and 31 and the pour in place rubber ground cover will be installed later in August. The plan is to have it ready for the start of the 2022-23 school year. St. Mary School and PTU plan on an opening celebration to thank all of the people who gave time, talent and treasure to make this possible.
