Students Write Their Own Tales

As a follow up activity to reading “Henry and Mudge” by Cynthia Rylant for their summer reading book, Burton Elementary School second-grade teacher Lisa Starr, had each second-grader bring their favorite stuffed animal to class on Aug. 30 in order to inspire them to create their own adventure stories.

There were stuffed bears, cats, rabbits and even fish and snakes in tow to spark the creative spirits of the second-graders. Students were engaged in brainstorming, planning, prewriting and drafting, as well as illustrating their original stories, which featured their stuffed animal and themselves as the two main characters engaged in a unique adventure. Students were engaged and excited in the writing process.
