WGMS Band Performs
On Sept. 7, the eighth-graders at West Geauga Middle School had the opportunity to perform with the high school marching band.
During the performance, the middle school students had the chance to see the detail required to complete an outdoor performance for the community, which helps them to prepare for their transition to the high school.
It is an annual event for the middle school music department. Just this year, over 50 members of the class of 2023 participated.
Kindergartners Enjoy Writer’s Workshop
A new curriculum, the Lucy Calkins Writing Workshop, has been launched in the West Geauga Schools.Kindergartners at Lindsey Elementary School spent time last week with their teacher, Mrs. Schultz, working on a combination of drawing and writing to help them tell about small moments from their lives.
With the new Lucy Calkins curriculum, students at both elementary schools will spend time learning the process of writing to help develop critical communication skills.
Parent Group Starting
Lindsey Elementary School is starting a parent advisory group this year. The goal of the group is to give parents more of an opportunity to engage in their child’s education by coming together and celebrating things that are going well at Lindsey.
As part of the group, parents will have a chance to collaboratively problem solve with the Lindsey staff. Any parent or guardian with a child at Lindsey can participate. Meetings will be held throughout the year, with the first one happening on Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Lindsey.
Facilities Master Planning Committee
The West Geauga Local Schools have been completing evaluative work on the state of the district’s facilities since spring.
As part of that process, a Facilities Master Planning Committee (FMPC) was recently convened to assist in the process. Including members of the staff, board, parents and other community members, the FMPC is working to determine what options could be proposed to upgrade West Geauga’s school buildings.
“The goal of the Facilities Master Planning Committee is to engage the community in conversation about the current condition and future needs related to our district’s facilities and to make a recommendation to the board of education on that topic” said Superintendent Rich Markwardt.
The process will include two open community meetings, to be held Oct. 9 and Nov. 13.
Community Dialogues Scheduled
The West Geauga Schools invite the community to join for two community dialogues on the Facility Master Plan process to be held Oct. 9 and Nov. 13 at the West Geauga Middle School at 6 p.m.
An overview of the master plan process will be given and community members will be able to provide their feedback on the facility options for the school district.
