High School Band Performs in 20th Anniversary Trip to Westwood
The West Geauga Marching Band took a quick trip within the district and performed for the students of Westwood Elementary School.
The tradition of having the band visit Westwood has been happening for twenty years and is something that the high school and elementary students both enjoy.
While at Westwood, the band performed several numbers from their Fall season. The assembly included the drill team and interactive songs to allow the Westwood students to participate with the high school band members.
Buddy Reading Encourages Proficiency
At Westwood Elementary, second grade students are working alongside their teachers to help Kindergartners become proficient in reading and writing.
Students from Mary Beth Alley’s Kindergarten class have partnered with Frank Vosicky’s second grade for a buddy reading program. The program has created a partnership where students practice reading books and then share their books with each other when they meet.
Alley said, “During our writers workshop time, we teach the children that they are writers and that writers share their work with other people. We are also teaching them to be good listeners and to ask questions to help their friends add more details to their writing.”
When partnered with younger students, the older students are able to model those behaviors for the younger students and the Kindergarten students get to practice the skills they have been learning.
