Students Coordinate USO Donations

As a part of Westwood’s observance of Veterans Day, students from the school donated items for military personnel that were given to the USO coordinators at West Geauga Middle School.

The items that were donated by Westwood students and families are used to create care packages for military personnel on activity duty. The Westwood Student Council and staff coordinated the drive. Students brought in a variety of items that included snack crackers, jerky, gum, mints and personal hygiene items as well as small games, cards and puzzle books.

Anti-Bullying Culture Promoted

Principal Deborah Nanney introduced the “kindness” theme at this school year’s kick off assembly at Westwood Elementary School to set the tone for an anti-bullying year.

As part of the challenge, the staff wears “Kind is the New Cool” T-shirts while students have been taking the kindness challenge both in and out of the classroom.

Guidance lessons throughout the semester have been supporting the effort by learning to identify those who need a friend, actively helping others and saying hello to all of their classmates.

Westwood students are encouraged to be a “Kid Against Bullying” and to take the pledge to speak up and learn how to prevent bullying.

Steel Drum Band Premiers at West G

West Geauga High School is launching a new addition to the music program this week – a steel drum band.

Taylor Uveges, one of the teachers in the music department, was in the well-known steel drum band at Miami University and is bringing her expertise to the high school.

Jason Branch, music department chair, said, “The steel drum band will function similar to our jazz band, which performs at all school concerts, local music festivals, and community events.”

The steel drum band will premiere this week at the winter concerts held by the high school.
