WGEF Board Awards Grants

The West Geauga Educational Foundation recently received and awarded grant proposals for funding during 2019.

WGEF funded over $14,000 for three innovative grants: “Google Expeditions Virtual Field Trips” presented by Anna Laubscher and Jilene Urbanek for use in both Westwood and Lindsey elementary schools; “Aquaponics” (food production, sustainability and population concepts) presented by Mike Sustin for the high school; and “21st Century Classroom” (modified and adaptable classroom learning options) presented by Angela Wyatt for use at Lindsey.

Said Caise McHale, WGEF president, “These are very innovative and exciting projects.”

More than $7,400 is available for additional grants to benefit the West Geauga Schools. Deadline for February grant submissions is Feb. 15.

Lindsey Pilot Takes Aerial of School

Lindsey Elementary School was the recent subject of Eric Milnar’s passion for flying and his family.

Milnar said, “We were descending through the clouds east of Cleveland while being vectored for an approach to land. Based on our flight path, I knew West G and our neighborhood were just ahead, so as we flew overhead just west of Lindsey, I took the picture.”

Milnar’s family has four students in the West Geauga Schools.

He said, “With my career as a pilot, I realize I may not always be able to be at all their activities. I am, however, always watching them grow up whether it be from afar or overhead as it was that Monday afternoon.”

Lindsey Students Pair to Compare

Second-grade students from Lindsey Elementary School, working with their teacher Evanthia Hocevar, spread out on the floor to take a closer look at two different versions of the fairy tale, “Little Red Riding Hood.”

Lessons like these allow students to hone their reading skills while working together in a small group – skills they will use as they progress through the West Geauga curriculum.

First Place in Writing Contest

Lindsey Elementary School student Isobel Schulz won first place in the 2018 Kids’ Prose Writing Contest sponsored by a newspaper located in New Mexico called “Pasatiempo.”

Her piece, “Monsters Aren’t Real,” was featured in a recent edition of the paper as part of the contest.

The story features the character of Jaden, a young girl who meets Ceci the monster and is transported into another realm.
