WGEF Awards Grants
The West Geauga Educational Foundation had three grant request sessions held this year – November, December and February.
Over $22,000 was awarded to the following innovative programs: IXL interactive learning tool presented by Amy Davis and Jackie Hersh; Google Expeditions virtual field trips for Westwood and Lindsey elementary schools, presented by Anna Laubscher and Jileen Urbanek; Aquaponics for West Geauga High School, presented by Mike Sustin; and 21st Century Classroom for Lindsey Elementary
School, presented by Angela Wyatt.
“It is highly unusual for an education foundation to award grants in this volume and of this magnitude to classroom teachers. We are very fortunate to have the Ed foundation do so in West Geauga,” said Superintendent Richard Markwardt.
These innovative programs supplement the programming and technology already present in the West Geauga School District.
West G Earns “A” Awards
The Ohio Board of Education has recognized West Geauga Middle School and the West Geauga Local School District for earning overall “A” grades on the 2017-2018 Ohio School Report Card. Only 28 school districts and 310 individual schools in Ohio were recognized with the honor.
“We are proud of this achievement by our students and staff. This is the first year that the State Board of Education has issued this award. We are honored that both West Geauga Middle School and the West Geauga Local School have been named as recipients,” said Superintendent Rich Markwardt.
Students Mentor Kindergartners
Kindergartners at Lindsey Elementary School have the benefit of a “buddy” during the school year to help with adjusting to school’s activities.
The mentor project helps new students to the building feel comfortable because they know an older child. The older students have the opportunity to share what they have learned and build a relationship with younger students who might be intimidated by starting school.
