Sixth-Graders Attend Camp Fitch

As part of a yearly tradition, sixth-grade students from West Geauga Middle School headed off to Camp Fitch in Erie, Pa. While attending camp, the students take part in a variety of outdoor activities such as an obstacle course, archery, pioneer cooking, candle making, lake study and outdoor games.

Senior Citizens Recognition Dinner

On April 24, the West Geauga Schools hosted the 29th annual Senior Citizens Recognition Dinner. The evening is an event dedicated to thanking the senior citizens in the community for their support and dedication to the district.

“It is a pleasure to see so many community members come out for the Senior Citizens Recognition Dinner,” said Superintendent Richard Markwardt. “We think it is important to acknowledge the support they give our students and our district.”

The event featured food from local favorite Guido’s, music from the West Geauga Steel Drum Band and entertainment by magician Rick Smith Jr., who has appeared on “The Tonight Show,” “Ellen” and “America’s Got Talent.”

Band Concert Features Movie Favorites

The final West Geauga Middle School band concert of the season featured sixth-grade band, seventh-grade band, eighth-grade band and the middle school jazz band.

Each band played educational arrangements of music appropriate to their level, but the concert also featured recognizable pop music and movie music. The sixth-grade band played “Happy” by Pharrell, the jazz band performed “Bare Necessities” from “The Jungle Book” and the seventh-graders performed “Pirates of the Caribbean” with two students sword fighting through the audience. The eighth-graders performed the “Avengers” theme with an accompanying video that included clips from various superhero movies.

Band director Jason Branch said, “The students perform in two concerts each year, and the spring concert is a culmination of all of the musical skills they have learned throughout the year including new notes, new rhythms, unique tone color combinations and enjoyable repertoire performed for the audience.”
