Students Artwork Recognized
Students who had their artwork featured at the West Geauga Board of Education this year were recognized publicly for their contributions.
Said Superintendent Richard Markwardt, “We appreciate the hard work of the students and their instructors as they share their creativity with us.”
Each year, student artwork is displayed in the board office to be enjoyed by the public, students and staff.
Outstanding Educator Award
Lisa Dwyer, a special education teacher at West Geauga High School, has been awarded the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award for 2019.
Said Dwyer, “I am beyond honored to be recognized for this award. Teaching is my passion and my students are my pride. Each day I come in to teach my students and each night I leave with my students teaching me.”
The Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award was created in honor of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction in the State of Ohio. He held that post from 1977 until 1991. Among Dr. Walter’s achievements was his work to develop planned instruction for children with disabilities in the State of Ohio.
Ask the Expert
Westwood Elementary School first-graders participated in an animal research unit called “Ask the Expert.”
Teacher Teri Javorek commented, “First, we learn about the features of nonfiction texts and how to read nonfiction. Then they choose an animal to research. They take notes and display their new learning on a display board.”
At the end of the unit, parents are invited to come to school to learn from our animal experts. Students practice their speaking skills by giving short presentations to the visitors.
