Hello from Geauga County Amish Country...

Hello from Geauga County Amish Country,

It was a nice crisp morning on Nov. 13 – not quite so cold, but some sunshine would have felt good.

The annual craft show was on Nov. 11 at Buster Miller’s on the corner of Newcomb and Nash roads. There was a good turnout, with many different vendors and lots of food sold, including Italian sausage sandwiches, French fries, cheese fries, hot dogs, chicken noodle soup, soft pretzels, ice and regular coffee and soft drinks. It was a fun day.

Born to Aden and Rosanna Troyer, a baby, Amy Rose, on Nov. 9. Grandparents are Dan and Sylvia Miller and Melvin and Ellen Troyer. She is also my great-granddaughter.

Also, born to Roy C. and Mary Miller, a son, Myron. I am not sure of the date. Grandparents are Crist Millers and John and Sylvia Detweiler.

Taking a load of horse blankets and horse pads to Lancaster, Pa., on Nov. 9 were Richard and Sue and son Jesse, Joe and Saloma Miller, Eli and Kathryn Byler and Eli Ray Jr., and Wayne and Edna Mae Hostetler and baby, returning home the evening of Nov 11.

Supper guests the evening of Nov. 12 at grandson Danny and Karen Miller’s were Perry and Katie Ann, David, Steven and friend Maria, brother Marlin and Marsha, grandparents Mose and Martha Yoder and I. We were served a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings. We had a very enjoyable evening.

If plans hold out, daughter Betty and daughters Lorena and Juanita Byler are planning to come down from Mio, Mich., on Nov. 14 and returning the afternoon of Nov. 15. They want to take back things they bought at my auction. If I can find a way home next week, I will go home with them. Then, I could also visit brother-in-law Eli Kauffman, who recently had kidney surgery.

Brother-in-law Melvin Yoder spent several days in the hospital with a blood clot on his lung and pneumonia. At the same time, in the same hospital was brother-in-law Clarence Bender after falling and breaking his hip and wrist.

Two weeks ago, son Joe Jr. had an accident at work when an18-by-18-inch-by-14-foot long cantilever fell on his right foot, breaking all five toes. He had an appointment on Nov. 13 for a checkup to see if surgery is needed.

Bits and Pieces from Days Gone By

Geauga County, Ohio: March 5, 1891

People are busy boiling maple syrup and sugar.

D.J. Miller’s family prepared a nice dinner in a little box for some Holmes County men to take along on the train, but by hiding it at the depot store in a store box, it failed to do the visitors any good.

Michael Troyer and son are busy working on the stave mill.

D.D. Miller is doing a good business in slate roofing and carpenter work and is at present engaged in building a house for J.C. Schlabach.

Chuckle

The waitress handed the man a menu, and trying to be helpful, she said, “I have spare ribs, pork brains, calf liver, beef tongue and…”

“Hold it,” he said. “You’ve got your troubles, I’ve got mine. Why don’t you skip the sad story and bring me a burger, fries, a cup of coffee and piece of apple pie.”

Thoughts to Remember

Children’s ears may be closed to advice, but their eyes are open to example.

Try as often as possible to smile – it’s the key that fits the lock of everybody’s heart.

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.

You all have a good week.
