Astronomy naturalist Chris Mentrek invites anyone interested in astronomy to attend free virtual programs this spring.
Upcoming programs include Black Holes on April 24, Radio Astronomy on May 22 and Make a Sundial on June 26, all from 7-8 p.m. Registered participants will receive a Zoom link by email prior to each program.
Buckeye Trail Long Haul Hike
April 25, 8 a.m.
The park district will host a self-guided, 16.6-mile Buckeye Trail Long Haul Hike with shuttle support and return transportation for participants.
The hike begins from Headwaters Park’s gravel Maple Highlands Trail lot and travels north along the Burton section of the Buckeye Trail through several park district properties to Big Creek Park.
The route includes 11.4 miles of paved trail and five miles of gravel, with two water stops and multiple restroom locations. A detailed map will be provided.
Due to the distance and pace, the hike is recommended for experienced participants prepared for a full day outdoors. Estimated completion time is five hours or more. Appropriate footwear, layered clothing, water, food and other personal supplies are advised.
Touch-a-Truck
April 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Geauga Park District will host Touch-a-Truck as part of America250’s Ohio Moves Transportation Month at The West Woods.
Visitors can explore tractors, trucks and construction equipment used to maintain local parks. The event offers hands-on activities for children of all ages. Shuttles will run from overflow parking at ASM International on state Route 87. No registration is required.
Earth Day Drive-Through
April 25
The park district will host an Earth Day Drive-Through at Veterans Legacy Woods, offering participants the opportunity to pick up bags of native plants.
Registration is required to reserve a pickup time. Cost is $5 for Geauga County residents. Participants must select a 15-minute time slot between 9 and 11:45 a.m.
Distribution is limited to one bag per vehicle or family. Those carpooling should register separately for the same time slot and bring confirmation.
Staff will also distribute native tree saplings, including red oak and gray dogwood, while supplies last.
